How can I submit my project?

The only way to take part in the contest is via the online application form. You will find it in the guidelines of the call for applications. Documentation sent by any other means will not be considered.

I am having problems with the registration and access to the form, what should I do?

Some browsers may give problems sometimes. So please try to access it with a different browser.

If the problem persists: when you registered, did you receive a confirmation email? Please check the spam folder of your mailbox, you won’t be able to access until you confirm your account through this email. If you can’t find this email, please contact us.

What happens between the closing of the registration period and the awarding of the prize?

First comes the deliberation period, in which we will probably get in touch with some of the finalists in order to know and specify all the possible details of the project. This phase will last approximately two to three months. Once the call has been resolved, we will contact the winner. Following acceptance of the prize, a public announcement will be made. The publication of the winning project will coincide with the launch of the next call for proposals.

When will the winners of the Puchi Award be announced?

There is no fixed date in advance. The winning project will most likely be announced about three months after the closure of the open call.

Will the winner receive royalties from the sale of the published work?

Of course. As in any standard publishing contract, the author receives an advance. Once the sales of the work amortise the amount received as an advance, the author receives the royalties periodically.

Does the work have to be finished when it is submitted to the competition? Can it be half finished? Can it be a rough idea?

Unfinished works are not accepted. By ‘finished work’ we mean a first draft. This means that there may be changes later, but that everything must be defined in the proposal, including the visual part.

The colouring may not be completely finished, but it must be at least 20% complete.

What genres are eligible for the prize?

The book we refer to is a work in which images play a major role in the narrative or expository development of the work. This includes established artistic categories such as the illustrated album and the comic book, as well as hybrid avenues or those on the margins of the above. Anything is possible, as long as the image plays a leading role. Works without text, and the use of any type of image: illustrations, photos, collage or any other type of image, are accepted.

Any project in which the images have a merely accessory, decorative or complementary function, or in which the images are limited to accompanying a text, will not be accepted for the competition.

What will be the jury’s criteria for awarding the winning project?

The aim of the prize is to give visibility to works of great quality and originality that stand out for their starting idea, their originality, their character, their unconventional nature, their commitment to rupture, their humour, their humanity or their artistic stature in general. The trajectory of La Casa Encendida as a cultural institution and that of Fulgencio Pimentel as a publishing house should serve as a clue, but the rest of the juries will change with each edition and it will be the resulting criteria that will prevail.

Do I have to conform to a certain length or format?

There is no limit on length or format. Your work can be as many (or as few) pages as necessary. There is also no restriction on the type of images: all techniques are possible (illustrations, photos, collage or any other type) or on the amount of text. Wordless picture books are allowed.

How many project can I submit?

Only one entry can be submitted per participant.

Do I have to register my work in order to submit it?

No. Intellectual property registration is not a requirement for participation. It is up to the author to do so or not. The rules state that the only person responsible for doing so is the author.

What should the final manuscript of the work contain?

This is the finalised project, including the complete content in a final version of the work in terms of creation (text and images). It is not necessary to include a closed editorial design at this point, as this is an aspect that the organisation will work on together in later stages with the winning author.

What should the portfolio contain?

The portfolio should contain a sample of previous work by the authors involved in the project. It can contain images, descriptions, video or audio links, text excerpts or any other resource you consider necessary to give an idea of your previous work.

We would like to submit a collective project. Should we need to fill in several applications?

No, it is only necessary to fill in one application per project. One of the members of the collective will act as a representative, providing their details and identification on the application. However, you must include the CV of all members.

My project is not written in English, so why am I required to send at least two pages in English?

Although the organisers are Spanish, Puchi is an international prize and you can send us projects in any language in the world, even in Elvish or Klingon if you think your project requires it. Since it is very unlikely that the members of the jury will know all the languages of the world, we had two options: to ask all non-Spanish speakers to submit their work in English – not very fair for those whose mother tongue is not English – or to ask for a small sample in English to get an initial idea of the project. Two pages is not a big effort and it is fair to ask all participants to do so. On the other hand, and again because Puchi is an international award, the jury will not always be Spanish-speaking, so those pages in English will be necessary so that all jury members can at least get an idea of each of the projects. It may not be a perfect solution, but it’s close enough.
